TOXICITY
Super glue was originally intended
as an emergency field suture to prevent
soldiers from bleeding to death.
The project was a partial successâ
it kept them from bleeding to death
but poisoned their blood, killed them anyway.
Relationships can be just like that.
When one is sick, trying to save it
can poison your everything.
To be happy, we must all
learn to be surgeons, to cut
away that which cannot be cured.
APRIL 16, 2007
when i visit the wikipedia page about your murder,
it takes me almost five minutes to find your name.
it is tucked deep among the list of the 31 other victims.
i hate that word. victim. itâs so small. words
should have to be as big as the concept they describe.
whatever word we replace victim with should take as long to say as it took me to find your name.
there you are. Henry Lee, number 16.
it took me so long to find you because they used your
government name, your american name,
the one your parents thought would keep you
safe. even though i never heard anyone
call you anything other than Henh.
Henh Lee
Henh
Henh
when i type your name, Henh Lee, into google,
i find a thousand living people with your name
and no mention of you. i spend hours looking at their photos to see if any of them have your smile
so i can hate them. call them thief.
when i type Henry Lee into google,
i find the wikipedia page about your murderer.
the thing i hate most about being human
isnât our penchant for violence; itâs
the fact that we wonât be remembered
for the lives we lead, only for the
person who made us this way.
despite all the death i have seenâ
how often i have wanted to bring someone backâ
i have always hated all frankenstein stories.
no one seems to care or even remember
frankenstein was the scientist.
the creation was nameless,
nameless like you feel now, Henh.
the wikipedia page about the virginia tech massacre
is 12,000 words long. less than 500 are dedicated to
the 32 who were murdered. the rest are about him.
about the man who made you nameless.
